In this episode, Emrah Altindis joins us to discuss his excellent publication, Parabacteroides distasonis insulin B:9-23 epitope mimic stimulates insulin specific T-cells and enhances type 1 diabetes in NOD mice. The main goal of Dr. Altindis' lab is to better understand the role of microbial mimicry mechanisms in human diseases and characterize these microbial proteins. In addition to the potential effects on metabolism and physiology of the host, these microbial mimickers have the potential to cause autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes.
